Photographs of people document the times, reveal face and body as timeless works of art. They inspire stories, stimulate curiosity and mystery, elevate the ordinary to uncover our deeper humanity—sometimes uplifting, sometimes solemn, always real. Peer into the eyes of a person in a photograph, and the moment may touch something within you.

Photographer’s Note

World War One Veteran 1976

This photograph was taken on July 4, 1976, as World War I veterans gathered on a courthouse square to watch the nation’s Bicentennial parade. At the center is a man whose deeply lined face and steady gaze tell a lifetime of stories. As a young veteran, I have wondered what memories and emotions he carried in that moment—the fading idealism of his youth, the sadness of the changing times, or defiance and pride for defending his country.
